We recommend that you allow at least one hour to explore each of these issue with a potential contractor. This hour can save you countless hours of conflict later in the project. Below is a list of questions you would want to ask each contractor you are asking to bid on your home improvement project.
What is the full name and address of the contractor? Reject any contractor without a permanent place of business.
Does the company carry insurance and is the coverage adequate? Reject any contractor without proper and adequate insurance.
Is the company a licensed contractor? Is the contractor a member of a trade association and in good standing? Reject any contractor who blows off your questions as not being important.
How long has the contractor been in business? Most contracting businesses (90%) fail in the first 5 years. A good contractor will gladly give you a list of references.
What is the contractor’s track record for handling complaints? Reject any contractor who tells you they have had no complaints. Ask for a problem account and how they took care of the customer.
What is the company’s workmanship warranty? Too long or too short are not good. Does the company have the resources to stand behind what they do?
Does the contractor have a code of ethics they stand behind? Will they call you back? Will they only bid projects that are structurally and financially sound?
